Cabot's Benchtop Clear Water Based

Cabot's Benchtop Clear is a timber benchtop polyurethane for use on living areas and kitchen timber benchtops. It is a highly durable food safe* varnish that is heat* and stain resistant. This non-yellowing benchtop coating is water based, and has a low odour. It can be used as a clear topcoat over Cabot's Interior Stain Water Based. *This benchtop finish is not suitable for chopping boards, food containers or utensils.

Choose your timber condition

Sand the surface smooth using 180 -240 grit sandpaper. Sand only in the direction of the grain. Remove all traces of sanding dust.

  1. Thoroughly clean the surface with Cabot's Floor Clean and allow to dry.
  2. Apply one coat to a small test area. Allow to dry for 24 hours. Press sticky tape firmly to the surface and pull off quickly. If the coating comes off, sand back further to a sound surface.

Previously coated interior timber with highly visible scratches, imperfections or surfaces that are severely worn must be sanded prior to coating.

  1. Do not shake can
  2. Stir thoroughly with a broad flat paddle before and during use.
  3. Apply with a good quality brush, short nap roller or spray gun. If spraying, back brushing is recommended. If brushing or rolling, always apply in the direction of the grain. 
  4. Allow to dry for a minimum of 2 hours. For best results, lightly sand to remove any grain raise using 240 grit paper. Remove all sanding dust. 
  5. Apply second & third coats as above.

Hot tip!

Fill nail holes, cracks and other defects with Cabot's Wood Tone Putty after applying the first coat of this product for accurate colour matching. Remove stains, dirt, wax, grease and oil with mineral turpentine. Remove any polish with a suitable polish remover.

If timber is to be stained, apply one coat of Cabot's Interior Stain Water Based or Cabot’s Stain & Varnish Water Based following label instructions. Then apply Cabot's Benchtop Clear.

Once the surface becomes excessively scratched and worn, it's time for a re-coat.

  1. Thoroughly clean the surface with Cabot's Floor Clean and allow to dry.
  2. Apply one coat to a small test area. Allow to dry for 24 hours. Press sticky tape firmly to the surface and pull off quickly. If the coating comes off, sand back further to a sound surface. If the coating adheres apply 2 coats across the entire surface.
