Cabot's Exterior Clear is an exterior polyurethane that provides a high gloss marine varnish. This clear varnish is perfect for exterior doors, windows and trims. Designed to provide resistance against weathering, mould and moisture damage, it provides supreme durability with a foolproof 3-coat system. Available in gloss or satin.

Previously wax coated finishes, walk-on areas, outdoor furniture, broad wall application such as cladding or weatherboards, areas subject to long term immersion in water.

Fill holes and imperfections with a suitable timber putty.

Prep New Timber
  • Scrub damp timber with Cabot’s New Timber Prep, following the label instructions.
  • This draws out tannins and oils, so you can skip the 4–6 week weathering period.

Clean
  • After using New Timber Prep, wash the surface with Cabot’s Deck Clean, following the label instructions.

Remove Excess Water
  • Use the squeegee on Cabot’s Deck Prep brush to remove any excess water from the surface.

Dry
  • Allow the timber to dry for at least 1 hour before coating.
  • Note: Cooler conditions may slow down drying time.

Remove Old Coating
  • Strip the surface back to bare timber.
  • Use a paint stripper or sand thoroughly until all coatings are gone.

Clean Exterior Surfaces
  • Prepare a solution of Cabot’s Deck Clean as per the label instructions.
  • Apply to the timber, scrub well, and rinse thoroughly.

Clean the Surface
  • Use Cabot’s Deck Clean following the label instructions.

Test for Readiness
  • Sprinkle water on the timber.
    • If water beads on the surface, repeat the cleaning process.
    • If water absorbs into the timber, it’s ready for coating.

Sand the Timber
  • For best results, sand timber back to fresh substrate.

Clean the Surface
  • Use Cabot’s Deck Clean.
  • Follow the label instructions carefully.

Apply using Brush or Spray.

Stir & Pour
  • Stir thoroughly with a broad, flat paddle before and during use.

Apply Coats
  • Brush in the direction of the grain.
  • Apply 3 liberal coats, allowing 12 hours drying time between each.

Sand Between Coats
  • Lightly sand the surface after each coat for a smooth finish.

Regular inspection of all coated surfaces is recommended. Pay particular attention to sharp edges.
