National Tree Day Fun For Kids! Fostering A Love For Nature

Australia's stunning landscapes are home to some of the world's most unique trees, from the towering eucalyptus to the ancient Wollemi pine. At Cabot's, we believe in preserving this natural heritage for future generations. That's why we're excited about National Tree Day, a perfect opportunity to foster a love for nature in our little Aussies!

What is National Tree Day?

National Tree Day is an initiative launched by Planet Ark in 1996. It aims to unite communities through tree planting across Australia on the last Sunday of July every year. This day reminds us that by working together and making small changes, like planting trees and protecting our natural environment, we can create a lasting positive impact on our ecosystem.

Schools Participating in National Tree Day

National Tree Day is an event in which schools across Australia participate with the support of Planet Ark's Seedling Bank. This initiative provides students with the opportunity to learn about biodiversity, the significance of native plants, and how to plant seedlings.

For instance, St John's Lutheran Primary School in Victoria planted trees for its resident Koala family, while Corowa Public School in New South Wales created a habitat for squirrel gliders.

Planting Seeds of Happiness

A research report by Planet Ark "Needing Trees - The Nature of Happiness," reveals that children who spend more time outdoors are more likely to become happier adults.

Why is this? Nature has a powerful impact on our brains. Spending time amongst trees reduces stress hormones and promotes positive brain development. The report found that just one-third more outdoor activity can make a big difference.

This is where National Tree Day comes in. It's not just about planting trees – it's about nurturing future generations of environmental stewards who value nature's role in our well-being. By getting kids involved, we're helping them build a foundation for lifelong happiness and resilience.

Fun National Tree Day Activities for Kids

We have listed four activity ideas that will encourage your little one to learn more about trees while having a blast. Let's get planting, exploring, and creating!

  1. Seedling Safari: Turn tree planting into an adventure! Have kids dress up as explorers and search for the perfect spots to plant seedlings.
  2. Tree Treasure Hunt: Create a list of tree features (e.g., "smooth bark," "star-shaped leaves") and have children find trees that match.
  3. Tree Tale Time: Read stories like The Book of Australian Trees by Inga Simpson or Tree by Claire Saxby, which beautifully convey the importance of trees.
  4. Leaf Art Gallery: Collect fallen leaves and use them for art projects—pressing, painting, or creating collages.

Family-Friendly Tree Day Tips

Planting trees with your kids is a beautiful way to celebrate National Tree Day and create a lasting memory together. But where do you begin?  These simple tips will help you turn tree planting into a fun and educational family activity.

  1. Choose Native Species: Plant trees native to your area by joining a local community group here. Native trees support local wildlife and thrive in our climate.
  2. Make It Educational: Use apps like Australian Tree ID to identify species.
  3. Document Growth: Start a photo journal to track your tree's progress.
