Prepare

Before you get started, there are a few things you’ll need to do first – preparation is key!
Preparing the surface properly before you begin allows the oil to glide on smoothly for even coverage.

Clean

Depending on the surface you’re coating, there are several ways to get your timber ready:

Scrub damp Timber Surface

Use Cabot’s New Timber Prep on damp timber.

This helps draw out tannins and oils from the surface.

Clean the Timber

Apply Cabot’s Deck Clean following the instructions on the product packaging.

Drying Time

Allow the timber to dry for at least one hour before proceeding to any further treatment or coating.

Note: Cooler conditions could slow down the drying time of the timber.

Remove Old Coatings

Sand the timber surface thoroughly

Or use a paint stripper to eliminate any existing coatings.

Clean the Surface

Clean with Cabot’s Deck Clean following the instructions provided on the product label for best results.

Test for Coating Readiness

Sprinkle water onto the timber surface.

Assess the Water Reaction

If the water beads on the surface → More sanding is required.

If the water soaks in → The timber is ready to be coated with decking oil.

Sand the Timber

Sand back the surface to expose fresh timber.

Apply Cabot’s Deck Clean following the instructions on the product label for best result.

Fill Imperfections

After applying the first coat, fill any holes and imperfections using a suitable timber putty.

Apply

Stir Thoroughly

Stir Cabot’s Timbercolour® Deck & Exterior Paint thoroughly with a broad flat paddle before and during use.

Apply with a Brush

With a brush, roller or spray (if spraying, always back brush immediately), apply the product liberally along the length of the board, including exposed edges and the ends of each board.

Allow drying time

After you’re finished applying, leave your deck to dry for 2 hours before applying a second coat.

May be subjected to light foot traffic 24 hours after final coat. Normal foot traffic after 72 hours.

Wait for 7 days before replacing furniture and rugs.
