Preparation

  • Depending on your project, you may also need

    • Polish Remover
    • 180 - Grit sandpaper

Before you begin, it’s important to do that prep! Be sure to remove stains, dirt, wax, grease and oil from timber with mineral turpentine before you start anything, and get rid of any polish with a suitable polish remover. If timber has highly visible scratches, imperfections or surfaces that are severely worn, make sure you sand it down first. Any holes, cracks or gaps shouldn’t be filled until AFTER the first coat of Cabot's Cabothane Clear Water Based is applied.

  • Depending on the condition of your timber, there are several ways to get started:

1
Sand the Surface

Sand the surface smooth in the direction of the grain, using 180 - 240-grit sandpaper. Remove all traces of sanding dust.

1
Clean the Surface
  • Use Cabot's Floor Clean to thoroughly clean the surface.
  • Allow the surface to dry completely before proceeding.
2
Apply a Test Coat
  • Apply a small test coat of Cabot's Cabothane Clear Water Based on a discreet area.
  • Let it dry for 3 hours.
3
Perform Adhesion Test
  • Press sticky tape firmly onto the test area.
  • Pull it off quickly.
  • If the coating comes off, sand the surface back again.
  • Repeat Steps 2–4 until the coat adheres properly.

1
Prepare the Timber
  • Always start with bare timber.
  • If the timber is previously coated, sand the old coating back to bare.
2
Apply Interior Stain
  • Use Cabot's Interior Stain Water Based.
  • Apply the stain with a rag.
  • Wait 1–5 minutes until you are happy with the color.
3
Allow to Dry
  • Leave the stained surface for 2 hours to dry completely.
4
Apply Top Coat
  • Apply Cabot's Cabothane Clear Water Based as the top coat following the application instructions.

  • Using a good quality brush or spray gun, apply in the direction of the grain.
  • If spraying, back brushing is recommended.
3

Leave to dry for at least two hours.

4
Fill Holes and Imperfections

Once this is done, if there are any holes, cracks or any other imperfections, now is the time to fill them with Cabot's Wood Tone Putty to ensure accurate colour matching.
