How to prepare your deck for coating

Are you ready for summer? Got the barbie fired and you're all stocked up on SPF? There may be one summer prep step you're missing: prepping your deck for a fresh new coat. Because as much as we need SPF from the harsh Australian sun, so do our decks. Think about it: our front or backyard decks provide the space for us to make summer memories, whether that’s relaxing in the sunshine; taking a dip in the pool or having loved ones 'round. So treat that timber right and maintain its beauty and longevity with a fresh stain or oil. But it can't be without one critical step… prep!

Prepping your deck before coating ensures you get the best looking deck possible. Cabot's offer the essentials you'll need depending on the condition of your timber: Cabot's New Timber Prep, Cabot's Deck Clean, Cabot's Deck Brush, Cabot's Deck Hand Bucket. With Cabot's Deck Clean, your deck is clean and rejuvenated, working to clean grey, weathered and soiled timber, while removing mould and other contaminants. If your timber is new, New Timber Prep will remove tannins and oils meaning you can skip the 6 week weathering.

Get Started

1. If working with new bare timber, start the process by using Cabot's New Timber Prep - following the directions on the label. For all other surfaces, start by wetting down the deck with water.

2. Mix 1 part Deck Clean with 4 parts water in the Deck Hand Bucket.

  1. Apply generously to the timber and scrub vigorously using your brush.
  2. Leave for 10-20 minutes adding more solution to the surface as required to avoid it from drying out. Then rinse off using the highest pressure from a garden hose. If using a high pressure cleaner, use the lowest setting to avoid damaging the timber.

Follow with 2 to 3 coats of your chosen finish for one good looking deck! Proper preparation is the first step you can’t miss, providing longer lasting results and contributing to a clean, good-as-new look. Check out Deck Clean and get your deck ready!
